New Forms/Megas for Groudon and Kyogre?

30 May 2014

The biggest mystery so far is, why do Groudon and Kyogre look so different?
This question roams through everyones brains at the moment, and it seems we have to wait at least 11 days before we might get anything cleared up. (E3 starts June 10th)

I will be taking a closer look to these new appearances and maybe we can conclude whether these are new Forms, Mega Evolutions or just redesigns.

Redesign

A redesigned Groudon and Kyogre solely made for the boxart? I don’t think so. There is definitely more behind these appearances. Even several official sources mention how Groudon and Kyogre look different compared to these boxart Groudon and Kyogre.
The Pokémon Company said these ‘redesigns’ are ‘never before seen Pokémon’. This terminology was used for Black and White Kyurem, as well as Mega Mewtwo Y (by then Awakened Form).
So if these are not redesigns, what are they? Let’s go in more depth.

Mega Evolution

This is a popular theory among fans. ”The Red and Blue Orbs are actually Mega Stones” is the most used argument to support this theory.
While it seems likely, and something Gamefreak could do, I personally don’t think this is going to happen.

These games are full remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, no way they would change the story to fit into the whole ‘Mega Evolution’ thing that was used for the previous games X and Y. I know, Mega Evolution is very popular and is just the Gen VI feature and belongs to that generation. But giving already powerful Pokémon an even bigger boost? No way.
Mega Evolutions are supposed to be given to weak Pokémon, but instead, strong Pokémon get them. Á la Mewtwo and Lucario.
Mega Evolutions don’t even make sense. Groudon and Kyogre are super ancient Pokémon, how could anyone make a Mega Stone for it?
And last thing; the designs don’t change at all. Their veins glow up, Groudon looks more angry and gets an Omega symbol, while Kyogre gets an Alpha symbol on his face. Mega Evolution is supposed to change the Pokémon’s design and even altering its weight and height. The ‘new’ Groudon and Kyogre don’t seem to change at all, other than the aspects I mentioned before.

Mega Evolution seems to be a logical step and I think many fans would like it, but I  don’t think Groudon and Kyogre will get such a reboot. This leaves us to only one option…

Alternate forms

I can finally talk about this!

Like I said before, Groudon and Kyogre don’t change much. Some Pokémon with alternate forms also don’t differ strongly from their original designs. Take a look at Keldeo and Arceus.

In the Animé, Pikachu lit up after coming into contact with the Blue Orb. Pikachu became seriously pissed of and couldn’t clearly think. I think that is exactly what is going to happen in the upcoming games.
In Ruby and Sapphire, after Archie/Maxie used the Red/Blue Orb, Groudon and Kyogre dissapeared to Sootopolis.
I think that in the remakes, the same thing is going to happen but only now with a small slight change; Groudon and Kyogre go bezerk and ‘transform’ into their Awakened Form before vanishing. (Or even Alpha and Omega form).
This makes so much more sense than the stupid Mega theory, and I can definitely see this happen.

There is, however, one problem I have with this theory. The footage we saw few weeks ago is most likely right after Archie/Maxie used the Red/Blue Orb. Groudon/Kyogre coming out of the water (Seafloor Cavern) and changing the weather with their abilities. You can also see a mountain in the background, which probably is Sootopolis City. So if this cutscene is right after the Orb event, than why didn’t Groudon and Kyogre changed appearances? Why didn’t they got so mad?
The form changing may take place right after the cutscene, or maybe the player goes to Cave of Origin with the Blue or Red Orb to calm the legendary down. But instead, the Pokémon goes in full rampage mode and you have to battle it in its new form.
(Or the cutscene is just the opening of the game)
Rather than powering up the Pokémon, the forms may act like Xerneas’ inactive form. It has no purposes and changes into his active form once entered battle.

Conclusion

The road to E3 is long, and there is no new information going to be revealed between then and now. Nintendo’s Digital Event, E3 or June’s Corocoro is going to reveal the secret behind these new looks, or they will drop subtle hints. Fear even the worst; no information about these looks.
Only time will tell…
